Thread: Bird strike

    Cool Bird strike

Has anyone had or heard of anyone having a bird strike on there rotor in flight? If so what happened?

Dr. Bensen tested his rotor blades by firing turkeys into his spinning rotors using a twin-engine prerotator to bring the blades to very near flight speed. Direct hits did do significant damage but did not cause catastrophic failure. Don't tell PETA!

I have heard of forum of two. One was a rather large bird IIRC.
Neither were eventful except they had to land to change their underwear?

Also IIRC one was SportCopter blades do not remember the other one sorry.

They were both glad it did not hit the prop!

I'll stay away from them as best I can!

I hit a hawk on finale for landing. It seemed the bird was focused on a rabbit and had no idea I was even there.
The bird made a thud on the blades but nothing else was noticed.when I returned to the hanger I had a mess to clean off the blades. No dings or dents. I didn't even notice a drop in RPM.
Went the next day to the site and noticed a huge area of feathers scattered.

How did you cook the hawk, in the oven or deep fryer?

    Hi Kevin

The rumor is that Stan beat him to the air kill and they had squire and hawk stew?

    LOL funny John.

Kevin, the hawk exploded pieces goop everywhere. Took an hour to clean it off the Twinstar
