Gyroplane Review On the light aircraft scene, news seems to be focusing more and more on single-seat aircraft. Apparently the environmental benefit of lower emissions, current economic uncertainties and the sometimes high price of two-seaters is stimulating interest in light single-seaters–including gyroplanes. Claudio Pagotto had barely presented his new single-seat “Lite Gyro” to the aviation world before he was flooded with orders, especially from the usa. Obviously, today’s pilot is not only looking for an inexpensive aircraft combined with an acceptable price/performance ratio, but also something that is fun to fly solo. Proven Components Pagotto didn’t have to reinvent the wheel when designing the Lite Gyro. In order to be able to offer a powerful, reliable and affordable gyroplane right from the start, almost all of the required components came from the Italian manufacturer’s tried and tested two-seat model aircraft. How is the Lite Gyro constructed? To start, the supporting structure is made out of welded stainless steel square tubes. The double-beam main frame rail, specially developed for the Lite Gyro, branches out behind the 14-gallon The rotor head and rotor blades also come from the Pagotto’s two-seat model. Both the Rotax 582 and the Simonini Victor 2 Plus engines are available to power the gyro. Both are two-cylinder, two-stroke powerplants. The Rotax develops 64 hp, while the Simonini is rated at 102 hp. Both have an excellent power-to-weight ratio. The mast, the controls, the rotor head and the aluminum rotor blades are identical to those from the proven twoseater from Pagotto, located 40 miles north of Venice, in Godega di Sant’Urbano, Italy. The typical two-blade rotor for gyroplanes is available with a diameter of 25' 11", 26' 3" or 26' 10". The elevators and rudders are built out of welded tubing and then covered with Dacron. This saves weight and keeps the cost of constructing them low. The landing gear struts are made of 35 mm (1.38 in) diameter Zicral, which is an aluminum alloy with good ductility, high strength, toughness, and resistance to fatigue. The 7075 alloy is made of primarily aluminum, with zinc as the primary alloying element. It also has small amounts of magnesium and copper. The nylon wheel rims, which seem a bit cheap for my taste, have two bearings. If you also don’t care for the nylon rims, they can be replaced with higher quality models. This combination of the tried and tested along with some new is a good way to be able to offer a reliable gyro right from the start.
