Gyros took to the sky in spurts and spatters as the on again, rarely off again showers grounded most flying activity. But if you can’t fly, what’s the next best thing? Hangar flying, of course. And there was a lot of that going on. Gyro conversations in the hangar, the cantina, the tents, the campers and pop-up awnings—anywhere under cover— filled the air. By Friday of the convention, it was time to shake things up a bit, so an impromptu Gyro 101 and Beyond was held in the hangar classroom. Gyro instructors and experienced flyers answered any and all questions on the sport. Topics ranged from getting behind the power curve and height-velocity curve to decision making and licensing. It was a full day of Q & A where everyone learned something. Vance Breese, gyroplane cfi, handled the judging of the machines this year. The “Classic” Single Place honor was given posthumously to Gary Goldsberry and his “polishedto-a-T” Bensen. The award was presented to Gary’s family members who wanted this award placed beside his gyro in the Archimedes Museum on the pra field. The Best Modern Two-Place Gyroplane went to Greg Gremminger and his Magni M-16 with Rotax 915. The Grand Champion Award was given to Christine Toevs and her Titanium Explorer. Given the peak of covid in 2020 and the rain in 2021, the convention attendance both years was down considerably. The pra is planning on reversing that trend with a convention ‘re-boot’ of sorts in 2022. First off, the convention will follow Oshkosh August 2-August 6 and the banquet will be held on Saturday night. Secondly, and most importantly, the pra will be celebrating its 60th anniversary. Plans are in the making to make this a very special event. Diamonds typically represent 60th anniversaries, and this convention will be a real gem. Make plans now to attend!• Greg Gremminger flying his award winning Magni M-16 powered by a Rotax 915iS.
